The varnish is essentially a paint usually without pigment. It is mainly used to provide a protective surface coating, sealing and finishing of wood. It is a transparent liquid coating material that, when applied to a surface, dries a liquid mixture of oil and resin to form a hard glossy coating.

Most varnishes are made up of varying amounts of oil, resin, solvent, catalyst, UV additives to protect the wood from harsh weather conditions and damaging UV light. No other transparent coating is more resistant to the sea environment, protecting and caring for wood surfaces, than varnish.

The main causes of varnish peeling and discoloration in wood paneling, are damage caused by UV radiation and frost. Temperature fluctuations cause wood expansion and contraction.

Quality

Application

The first cause tends to shrink the wood as it dries, causing cracking, peeling and allowing water to penetrate the wood. On the other hand, when the trapped water in the wood freezes, it expands, causing the coating to crack again, since many varnishes are not flexible.

In these cases we will either have to apply many more coats of varnish than the paint would have originally required, or we should consider using a varnish that provides excellent UV resistance that protects and seals the wood.
